Booking choice: The Isle of the Dead day trip, from $132 per person. Check dates Tour details
Port Arthur is built for walking on your own. The main ruins sit close together around Mason Cove, and the entry ticket includes short talks by the site's guides and a self-guided audio experience. Nobody needs a tour to get in or to find their way round.
What a paid tour adds is depth and a route. The site runs four daytime tours, from a flat 45-minute introduction to a 90-minute small-group walk, plus a ferry to the Isle of the Dead. Prices and times below come from the official tours page.
The quick answer
Yes, you can do Port Arthur self-guided: entry includes free 10 to 15-minute guide talks, an audio experience and the harbour cruise. If you add one paid tour, make it the 90-minute Premium Tour (A$85 with entry, A$30 more than entry alone, 15 people at most). Add the Isle of the Dead tour if you want to land on the cemetery island. With limited mobility, take the flat, 45-minute Essentials Tour.

Can you do a self-guided tour of Port Arthur?
Yes. Most visitors do. Your ticket includes a map, a self-guided audio experience, free guide talks through the day and the 20-minute harbour cruise.
The site's 2026-28 price list describes General Admission as full site access with a self-guided audio experience and the harbour cruise. Free Wi-Fi covers the grounds, so streaming works. The short talks run 10 to 15 minutes at set times; check the board at the Visitor Centre when you arrive and plan the day round one or two.
A self-guided route that works: the Penitentiary, the Guard Tower, the Separate Prison, the Convict Church, the Government Gardens, then the houses along the hill and the harbour cruise. Allow four hours. How long to spend has shorter and longer versions.
What guided tours does Port Arthur Historic Site run?
Four daytime tours, all with entry included: Essentials (45 min, A$65), Escape from Port Arthur (60 min, A$75), Premium (90 min, A$85) and Isle of the Dead (65 min, A$85).
| Tour | Length | Walking | Times | Adult |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials | 45 min | A few hundred metres, flat | 9:30, 10:30, 12:30, 3:45 | A$65 |
| Escape from Port Arthur | 60 min | About 2 km, some slopes | 11:00, 3:00 | A$75 |
| Premium | 90 min, max 15 | About 2 km, some slopes | 12:00, 1:30 | A$85 |
| Isle of the Dead | 20-min ferry + 45-min walk | Gradients up to 1:8 | 12:30, 1:15, 2:45 | A$85 |
| Ghost Tour | 90 min, after dark | About 2 km | Wed to Sun evenings | A$35, entry separate |
Child prices (3 to 16) are half the adult rate, and a family ticket covers four. All tours run in most weather. The site's price list puts the Escape walk at over 1.5 km of steep terrain, so read the walking column before you book.
The Isle of the Dead day from Hobart includes the guided island walk: about 4.3 hours on site.
Check dates for the Isle of the Dead day tripIs the Premium Tour worth it?
Yes, if you add only one tour. Ninety minutes, 15 people at most, through the Penitentiary, the Separate Prison and the Convict Church, for A$30 more than entry.
The Premium Tour page lists those three stops and frames the walk round the people: convicts, soldiers, officials and their families. Those are the three buildings where a guide earns their keep. The Penitentiary is a shell, the church a roofless frame, and the Separate Prison makes little sense until someone explains the silence it was built to enforce.
It leaves at noon and 1:30pm only, and with 15 places it sells out in summer. Book it with your entry. If you are on a day trip that reaches the site at noon, the 1:30pm slot is the one to aim for.
Is the Isle of the Dead tour worth it?
For anyone interested in the people behind the ruins, yes. It is the only way to land on the island, where more than 1,000 people who lived and worked at Port Arthur are buried.
The official tour page describes a 20-minute ferry on the MV Marana and a 45-minute guided walk among the headstones and the unmarked graves. Convicts, soldiers, free settlers and their children are all here. The harbour cruise passes the island; this tour puts you on it.
Two caveats. The island has no shelter or toilets, and the walkways climb at up to 1:8, which the site says may not suit restricted mobility. Coming from Hobart without a car, the Isle of the Dead day includes this walk in its $132 price.

Essentials or Escape: which short tour is better?
Essentials if walking is hard or you have young children; Escape if you like a story with a chase in it.
The Essentials Tour is, in the site's words, its most accessible guided tour: a relatively flat route of a few hundred metres, partly across grass and gardens. It works as an orientation at 9:30am, before you go off on your own. The Escape from Port Arthur tour follows the escape attempts: the disguises, and the line of chained dogs across Eaglehawk Neck. It is the one we'd pick for older kids.
Are the free guide talks enough?
For a first visit on a budget, yes. Ten to 15 minutes at a time, they give you the outline; a paid tour fills in the people.
Catch one talk early and one in the afternoon, and use the audio experience in between. That covers what most visitors want to know. Add a paid tour if you find yourself reading every panel and still wanting more, or if you have a convict ancestor and want time with a guide.

History first: four hours at Port Arthur with a guide who descends from convicts, and a group of 20 at most.

Some do. The Tasman Park day includes a guided walk, the Isle of the Dead day a guided hour on the island, and every day trip includes the free talks.
- Port Arthur & Tasman Park ($113): entry, a guided walk at the site and the harbour cruise, then free time.
- Isle of the Dead day ($132): entry, the cruise and the guided 1-hour walk on the island.
- Deep History tour ($136): your guide, a convict descendant, does the storytelling on the drive and at the site.
- Tasman Sights day ($108) and the Tasman Island cruise day ($246): entry and the harbour cruise; you join the free talks and walk on your own.
On any of them you can buy a site tour on top at the Visitor Centre, if a time fits your hours on site.
What is the best tour to take at Port Arthur?
With a car: entry plus the Premium Tour. Without one: the Isle of the Dead day from Hobart. With limited mobility: the Essentials Tour, or the Tasman Park day.
The site does a lot for A$55, and the guided tours are good value on top. Our picks, by traveller:
- First visit, own car: entry, the noon Premium Tour, the harbour cruise, then your own pace.
- History lovers: the Premium Tour and the Isle of the Dead tour on the same day. The ticket covers two days if that feels like a lot.
- Families with older kids: Escape from Port Arthur, then the Ghost Tour if you are staying.
- No car: the Isle of the Dead day for time and the island, or the Tasman Sights day for price.

About 4.3 hours at Port Arthur, the harbour cruise and the guided Isle of the Dead walk, with Richmond and Tasman Arch on the way.
